Jay Leno teared up yesterday as he retired from the Tonight Show. He said, "You're very kind. I don't like goodbyes. NBC does. The greatest 22 years of my life. I am the luckiest guy in the world. This is tricky. And the folks here became my family,” he said of the crew and staff of “Tonight.”
Billy Crystal, Oprah Winfrey, Jack Black, Kim Kardashian, Carol Burnett, Jim Parsons, President Barack Obama and Garth Brooks either appeared live or taped to say goodbye.
Jay's Best Lines of the Night Were:
"Well tonight is our last show for real. See I don't need to get fired three times, I get the hint. I get the hint."
"So much has happened in the last 22 years. You know the saddest part of all: O.J. never found the real killers."
"When I started hosting, Justin Bieber wasn't even been born yet. That's why we call those ‘the good old days.'"
"I got to tell you the outpouring from people has really been touching. Today, Anthony Weiner sent me a photo of his penis looking sad. Miss you. Love you. Miss you."
"I thought this was interesting. It was revealed this week that in the past couple years Hugh Grant has fathered 3 children with 2 different women. How ironic is that. I end my run the same way it began—asking Hugh Grant "What the hell were you thinking?" 22 years later, I ask him the same question."
Conan O'Brien joked: "The Olympics start airing tonight on NBC. It's very cool. That's right, NBC has the Olympics. It's a big deal. NBC will finally get to show somebody who is OK with passing the torch."
Craig Ferguson gave Jay Leno a 1969 Ford Bronco as a retirement gift.
He included a note that read:
Please accept this P.O.S. The starter motor is f--ked & the electrics are crap. It'll keep you busy if you get bored. You will be missed! Don't be a stranger.
