I was fortunate to catch the full version of Content Of Character on Sunday's ESPN Outside The Lines.
Union leaders of the 3 biggest sports, all African American, one female, in an eye-opening roundtable discussion. The video below is a mini-version. You may still be able to find the full length on ESPN TV.
Btw, I believe NBPA Executive Director Michele Roberts will be the most important woman in sports over the next few years as she negotiates a new CBA with NBA owners. And after mainstream (non-sports) America finds out about her, she also will likely be the most looked up to woman in the same vein as Michelle Obama.
The biggest thing to take away from the Rex Ryan's welcoming press conference has nothing to do with offense, defense, or making the playoffs. It has to do with building a business.
Every winning organization has a face. That face can represent many things…trust, honesty, excitement, energy, thoughtfulness, being pragmatic, youth, maturity. You may not always agree with the face...
Bill O'Reilly is the face of Fox News...controversial
Brian Williams and Jimmy Fallon are the faces of NBC...safe
Jerry Jones is the face of the Cowboys...'nuf said
FOX TV made it's mark by having BART SIMPSON as it's face. The network did pretty well with that.
The Buffalo Bills now have a face. Forget the x's and o's, wins and losses. For the first time almost 2 decades, the Bills have a face. The last face they had…Doug Flutie. Controversial player. But he was a face.
Nothing since then. The Bills now have a face…and something that represents them, and the city, besides the charging Buffalo logo and 75,000 crazy fans. As bad as fans want to be the face of a franchise, they can't be a building block. They can be a huge supporting cast.
So having a face is a GREAT start. That's the biggest thing you need to take away from yesterday's press conference.
So let's be super happy about that. Keep the bad vibes away til at least September...
This past half decade has shown a big change in music...production values rule maybe more than they ever have. Why else would Billboard put a Rihanna song at number 1 on it's best songs since 2010. RLITM completely disagrees with a lot of the top 10, but that's no surprise! Click the link & see what you think.
Tis the season where the germs are flying! When you're sick, you don't feel like eating, drinking or doing much of anything. Here are a few super foods that will help fight the flu and get you back on your feet!
Be in your seats by 6:45 tonight as the Sabres retire Dominick Hasek's #39 before the game against the Wings. Not only was Dominick an incredible goaltender, but quite a character, as you'll be able to tell from some of the interview segments in this Hasek highlight video!
We've been saying it for years...while the Oscars usually have you bored by the 45 minute mark, The Golden Globes are so much better produced, and so much more fun to watch. With power tables full of stars fueled by cocktails and champagne, a mix of TV, movie, and music categories, and an overall faster paced presentation, it leads to moments like Globe winners being stuck in the bathroom, and losers being called on stage (see the 1998 vid below). You rarely get those moments at the Oscars. The Academy Awards are just too stuffy, no matter how hard they try to contemporize.
In case you missed it, here is a quick recap of the People's Choice Awards that aired last night on CBS. All of our favorites were decked out and looking fabulous. There were some big winners such as Ben Affleck, Viola Davis, Betty White, "Maleficent," Robert Downey Jr. and "Grey's Anatomy". New Year Resolutions always seem like a good idea, until we have to ACTUALLY fulfill them. Majority of people often set themselves up for failure for not making realisitc goals. Check out these simply ways to keep your goals in line this New Year!
It's easier to ask the questions, than be asked. That's one big thing I will be taking away from the phone and Email sessions I had with Alan Pergament as he researched his piece on me for Sunday's Buffalo News. He did a great job keeping the tone life-affirming and positive. Many writers would have gone for the "woe is me" angle, which is the last thing I wanted... even if my voice wasn't nearly as far along in returning as it is.
And in my life-lesson quest to learn something from everything I do, the process reminded me that it's so much easier to ask questions rather than answer them. I'm gonna keep that top-of-mind the next time I ask a question and I don't get the the exact answer I was looking for, or even a quick answer, from my interview subject. In this "need it now" media world, we need to give people we speak with time to think and respond correctly. Too often we look for the instant answer, which often comes without depth.
Thanks, Alan, for asking some great questions that took me to areas I may not have visited on my own. Great job capsulizing what the past 3 months have been like.
I have no real update to the article...except to say that this could be a BIG week of medical appointments. But I've said that before, only to have status quo maintain. So I'll try not to jinx it, and leave it there. Have a great week!
