Strangest (And Possibly Worst) Live Musical Performance Of 2013

I DVR’d Letterman earlier this week so I could get his take on the Leno- Fallon controversy, and was happy to see The Flaming Lips would be performing.  I’m not a huge fan, but do appreciate them, and haven’t seen them live in a long time.

What I witnessed could only be described as the most bizarre, strange, goofy, and nearly unwatchable musical performance of the year.  From the yards of shiny duct tape wrapping the microphone and mic stand, to the plastic baby that was held and kissed by Flaming Lips lead vocalist Wayne Coyne during the performance, to the strangeness of the song itself, it was oddly engrossing, yet nearly unwatchable.

The whole thing was a flashback to a mid-1970’s David Bowie avant-garde performance, minus the good music.  Upon showing the video to my Producer James he remarked “who could sit through this?”  I did…and it’s so bizarre you probably will too, just to see if it gets any better.  Check out Letterman’s comments at the end about the baby “staying quiet for the whole performance.”  Priceless…

Check out Billboard Magazine’s take on it, and the raw video below
